What To Do With Dragon Fruit

There’s nothing better than a well-stocked fruit bowl on the dining room table, but sometimes those pears, apples and oranges can feel a little humdrum, a little on the dull side… however, it’s easy to add a little spice to proceedings every now and again with the addition of some beautiful and mysterious exotic fruits!

A wonderful addition to consider is the most intriguing dragon fruit, which isn’t just fantastic to look at with a hot pink exterior and white interior speckled with little black seeds but which also tastes delicious as well. It’s a real double-whammy of a fruit!

The dragon fruit - native to central America and southern Mexico - also goes by the name of strawberry pear, pitaya and pitahaya, and it’s now grown all over the world for everyone to enjoy the taste, which is often described as being something of a cross between a kiwi and a pear.

Much like other tropical fruits, dragon fruit is a very versatile ingredient to have at home and there’s a lot you can do with it… so here are just a couple of suggestions if you’re keen to give it a try.

Sorbet

Easy to make and a thrill for the tastebuds, dragon fruit sorbet is perfect for your next dinner party. Blend it together with water, lemon juice and sugar, then churn it up in an ice cream maker and freeze till you’re ready to enjoy it.

Smoothie bowl

Add a bright pop of colour to your morning fruit smoothie bowl and slice up some dragon fruit to include. Alternatively, freeze some along with banana, raspberries and other fruit, then blend everything up in the morning before slicing some kiwi to put on the top along with some chia seeds, flax seed, granola and some coconut flakes. What a way to start the day!

Fish dishes

Interestingly, dragon fruit works incredibly well with fish so don’t be afraid to pair it with savoury dishes. What about whipping up some dragon fruit coulis Atlantic cod with pink rice vermicelli if you’re looking to impress this Valentine’s Day?
